Biography

Jennifer Morrow was born in Northern Ireland, in 1988. Although born in a small city she has travelled extensively visiting Europe, Asia, Australasia, America, the UK and Ireland.  Studying in local colleges and universities her love for painting was founded at a young age. Social and cultural issues have always influenced and established a dialogue in her work but the main subject has always been the people she has encountered along the way.

After completing a degree in Fine Art she was funded by Northern Ireland Arts Council to complete an artist residency in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Her work was exhibited in the National Gallery alongside some of Thailand’s most recognized artists. Through this, a love for teaching and constructive practice was established.  Gaining experience through lecturing at Chiang Mai University she returned home to further her education in teaching. In 2015 she was awarded a Post Graduate Certificate in Education. A change in personal circumstances meant she was unable to continue this path at present.

Within this intermission of her life she returned to her true passion of which is painting.  Jennifer was selected out of thousands of applicants to take part in a BBC One Painting Program called “The Big Painting Challenge”. She worked along side Pascal Anson and Diana Ali and throughout the stages of filming was mentored and critiqued by Daphne Todd OBE, President of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters, Lachlan Goudie and David Dibosa.

It is this experience that has refreshed and heightened her interest in people. Not so much the people but the void experienced through brief meetings or the strangers passing in the street. Being removed from the comfort of her own surrounds she looked for confidence in many people she met, only to discover the lack of meaningful connections. She found it intriguing to see the many faces, the soulless expressions and to contemplate the various unknown stories.
The idea of the unfamiliar, things they may have seen, the people they are, the dissolved social interactions and at times the voyeuristic approach used to find comfort in the unknown, fuels Jennifer’s work today.

She places relevance on the notion of disengagements and questions perspectives not only for her as an artist but as the viewer, the void between art and lived experience. She uses watercolour, ink, acrylic and alcohol to create portraits and figurative paintings. Working in a fluid manner to create work that pulsates and challenges the mind she depicts the colourful from a bleak memory.
